Dental Sleep Medicine

If you are in need of Sleep Apnea treatment in Rapid City or Sturgis, please contact us today!

Sleep is a major part of our overall health. If you have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder called Sleep Apnea and are not wearing a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device (CPAP), Dr. Ron Loftus may be able to help with Oral Appliance Therapy.

Sleep Apnea Appliances

If you have been given a CPAP to wear while sleeping and are struggling with it and therefore not wearing it, then you are not treating your serious and potentially life-threatening condition.

Oral Appliance Therapy* may be an alternative to this device as it will not only help give you freedom from your CPAP, but also treat your sleep apnea.

Dr. Ron Loftus is a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and uses the latest technologies in non-CPAP oral appliances for both snoring and sleep apnea. Your appliance will be custom fit - made just for you!

* Note: New guidelines recently published in “Sleep”, the journal for medical sleep specialists, recommend that dental oral appliances be used as the first line treatment of choice for mild to moderate sleep apnea as an alternative to CPAP therapy.

How Does Oral Appliance Therapy Work?

Snoring and sleep apnea appliance therapy helps keep the airway open while you sleep by moving your lower jaw and tongue forward. Oral appliances, when properly fit and adjusted by a dentist with advanced training, are well tolerated by patients.

Indications for use of Oral Appliance Therapy include the following:

  • Primary heaving snoring
  • Mild / moderate and certain cases of severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Poor tolerance for nasal CPAP
  • Failure of UPPP surgery
