Periodontal disease has also been reported to be linked to the following problems:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes complications
  • Risk of pre-term and low birth weight babies
  • Stroke

Did you know that more than half of all people over age 18 have at least the early stage of some type of periodontal (gum) disease?

Signs of Gum Disease

  • Does your gum tissue bleed when you brush?
  • Is your gum tissue tender and swollen?
  • Do you have persistent bad breath?

The mildest form of gum disease is gingivitis and it is reversible. But, if it goes untreated, it may lead to periodontitis, in which the gum detaches from the tooth, causing deep pockets to form. This can lead to bone loss, which will ultimately lead to losing your teeth!

If you think you may have periodontal disease, this does not mean you will lose your teeth. Dr. Ron Loftus and Dr. TJ Loftus are general dentists with training in the treatment of gum disease.  We can help you keep your healthy smile for a lifetime!

Periodontal Laser Therapy

Laser Periodontal Therapy is a laser-based approach for the treatment of periodontal disease. The procedure requires no incision or stitches and heals quickly and naturally with full retention of gum tissue.

How does it work?

  1. Tartar, associated with inflamed and bleeding gums, is removed from the root surface of the tooth using an ultrasonic scaler and small instruments.
  2. A small amount of light energy from a laser is directed through a tiny fiber, which is gently placed between the gum and tooth.
  3. The light energy removes a tiny amount of diseased tissue and aids in reducing the bacteria associated with the disease.
  4. The area is thoroughly cleaned and the body is able to heal naturally.
