Am I a Candidate for Dental Crowns?

May 11, 2017 - 3 minutes read

If you have moderate to serious dental damage, like broken or cracked teeth or deep fillings that have become loosened, then you are probably a good candidate for dental crowns. Crowns are among the preferred restorative dental treatments, second only to dental implants, for restoring your dental function as well as your appearance.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are protective coverings, shaped and colored like your natural teeth, which correct damage and also protect your teeth from further harm. Not only will they look completely natural, they will also restore your ability to bite and chew the way you once did.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns can fix a variety of dental problems. If you have missing teeth, for example, you might consider dental implants, which are metal screws that are installed in your gums and then topped with dental crowns.

You will also be a good candidate for dental crowns if your teeth are seriously decayed. Your Rapid City dentist can remove the decayed areas, and as long as at least one-third of the decayed tooth remains, a crown can be used to restore and protect the underlying tooth structure.

If you have deep fillings that are causing the walls of your teeth to weaken, you can have dental crowns installed to keep the tooth from breaking. If your teeth are already broken or cracked, you are still a good candidate for dental crowns. Again, the main requirement would be that you have one-third of the tooth intact.

Dental crowns are also used to protect your teeth following root canal treatments. And finally, dental crowns can also be used for purely cosmetic purposes, giving you the smile you have always wanted.

About the Procedure

First, your dentist examines your mouth, and then prepares your tooth. At Loftus Dental, we use the CEREC system to take images of your teeth, so you will not have to bite into trays filled with goopy material. You will also not have to wait for a lab to make your crowns, since once the images are taken, they are sent directly to the milling unit and your crowns are made onsite. This means that a candidate for dental crowns can have them made and installed in just one visit. Lastly, our dentist cements the crown in place.
