Root Canal FAQs

A root canal is one of the most misunderstood dental treatments. If your dentist has told you that you need a root canal treatment, you do not have to be afraid. These root canal FAQs should help to ease your concerns.

What Is a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal is an endodontic treatment that your dentist uses when the pulp of the tooth becomes infected or damaged to the point where it cannot be repaired. With root canal treatment, the pulp is removed, and then the canal is cleaned out, reshaped, filled with a synthetic compound, and sealed.

Why Would I Need a Root Canal Treatment?

If you are in pain, or experience discomfort when you bite or chew, then chances are you need root canal therapy. It may also be warranted if your teeth are sensitive to heat or cold. You could also need a root canal in the absence of any symptoms, if your dentist has identified issues with the pulp that are apparent from your dental x-rays or other imaging techniques.

What Is Involved in a Root Canal Treatment?

First, your dentist will give you a local anesthetic. Then, he or she will create an opening in the crown of your tooth, and use instruments to clean and shape the canal so it can be filled. Once that is done, the tooth will be sealed and topped with a crown to protect it from further damage.

Will It Hurt?

No. You should have no sensation at all in your tooth while you are being treated. For a few days following the root canal treatment, though, you might find that you have a bit of sensitivity when biting. You can usually control this with over-the-counter pain remedies. If you experience severe pain, you should get in touch with us at Loftus Dental in Rapid City.

Should I Just Have the Tooth Extracted?

Not if root canal therapy will correct your dental issues. If you have an extraction, you will need to have the tooth replaced by means of a dental implant or bridge in order to keep the adjacent teeth from crowding into the gap.
