About Dental Implants

Dental Implants You Can Depend On

You’ve probably heard about dental implants and know that they’re supposed to function and feel exactly like your real teeth. But how is that possible? How do they work? Who needs them? Why would you prefer them over dentures?

These are all valid questions and ones that you’re probably asking if you’ve had an injury to your teeth, lost teeth due to gum disease, or had an accident that resulted in broken teeth. In any of these situations, a dental implant can be the perfect way to replace missing teeth.

Why? Because implants last a long time and feel totally natural. In fact, your implants might even outlast you!

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants

Dental implants are small posts, usually made from a super-durable metal known as titanium. The titanium replaces the root of the missing tooth. It’s attached to your jaw where the original tooth was lost, and then your dentist makes a crown that replaces the lost tooth. An implant is the Cadillac of tooth reconstruction – it lasts much longer and feels much more natural than other restructuring options like dentures or bridgework.

How Do Implants Work?

In order to have an implant, you’ll need minor dental surgery. During this procedure, you’ll receive a local anesthetic (so there will be no pain) before the implant is screwed into the bone, in the gap that’s been caused by the missing tooth. Often, it takes months to complete implant surgery, but at Loftus Dental, we offer a one-day procedure, with full arch tooth replacement in just one visit.

What are the Benefits of Implant Dentistry?

Perhaps you’ve only lost one tooth. Or perhaps you’ve experienced a loss of several teeth, due to an accident or neglected dental care. Either way, the procedure is the same. The implant restores the root section of your tooth, and the crown is created to look just like the tooth you lost.

Dental Implants

The implant will not decay and will require no special care. Just brush and floss as you normally would, and see us for checkups to make sure that everything is as it should be. The implant will look exactly like your original tooth.

The success rate for implants is nearly 100%, so implants are a great value. As we said, your implants may even outlast you!

It gets even better. If you’ve lost multiple teeth, you might not even need an implant for each tooth. If there are three or more teeth missing in sequence, we can create an implant framework for the teeth that remain. Your natural teeth will provide support for the implants.

Taking Care of Your Implants

Implants shouldn’t fail, unless you’re really slack about your oral hygiene. If you don’t brush or floss regularly, you could end up with a bacterial infection, and that could affect your implants. But since you care enough about your teeth to have the procedure done in the first place, we don’t see this as being overly likely.

Of course you should also avoid grinding your teeth. This can harm your implants in the same way that it would harm your natural teeth.
