About Porcelain Veneers
You know that porcelain is beautiful. It’s used to create fine china, decorative items, and more. Did you know that it’s also the material that most closely represents your natural teeth, and that it can be used to repair damaged, worn, discolored or misaligned teeth?
The translucent beauty of porcelain can be used in delicate-appearing yet very sturdy shells that cover a multitude of flaws in your natural teeth. You could even think of them as a costume for your teeth, much like the kind of costume Cinderella’s fairy godmother gave her for the night of the ball – except that they won’t turn into something less desirable at midnight.
To prepare your teeth to receive porcelain veneers, your dentist will scrape a bit of enamel off of your teeth. This is to prepare the surface of your teeth to receive the veneers. Then, impressions will be made of your teeth. These are used to create your veneers, which will then be bonded to your teeth.
Before attaching your veneers, your dentist will place them on your teeth in order to make sure that they fit properly. A special bonding cement will be used to attach the veneers to your teeth, and they’ll be cured using a special light. The dentist will scrape away the excess cement and do a final check to make sure that the color of the veneer is exactly right. And finally, the dentist will do a few final adjustments to make sure that your bite feels natural and you’re fully comfortable with your new veneers.
Because porcelain looks so natural, your veneers will look just like your real teeth or, more correctly, the way you always wanted your real teeth to look! They’ll be strong, stain-resistant, and won’t require any more care than what you’d do for your natural teeth. In other words, just brush and floss regularly, and see your dentist for checkups. Take care of them, and your veneers will last a long time.
Now it’s up to you – you can post on Facebook, “Hey, look at my great new porcelain veneers!” You can tell your friends and relatives that your dentist helped you fix up your smile. Or you can say nothing, and just let everyone you meet think that you were born with a gorgeous smile.
There are always potential disadvantages in any procedure, but with veneers, those disadvantages are minimal. Of course, since the procedure involves scraping away a bit of tooth enamel, you may find that in the beginning, your teeth are a little more sensitive to cold and heat than they were before. Usually the discomfort can be eased by using a toothpaste (Sensodyne, for instance) that is specially formulated for sensitive teeth.
Your teeth can also still decay. Veneers will not stop the decay process. But then, even without the veneers, you’d have that problem.
Simply stated, the benefits of veneers far outweigh the disadvantages. And if you’re unhappy with your smile, porcelain veneers are a painless option that can correct all kinds of defects. They’ll give you a natural-looking smile that will last a long time.
